(30 oct. 1918, Halyeville, Ala., EE.UU.–23 jul. 1999, Montgomery, Ala.).
Juez estadounidense. Al titularse luego de ocupar el primer lugar de su clase en la escuela de derecho de la Universidad de Alabama en 1943, ingresó al ejército con el grado de teniente de infantería. Después de la guerra regresó a Alabama a ejercer su profesión. Como juez del tribunal federal de distrito para Alabama central, nombrado en 1955, se hizo célebre por sus fallos en apoyo del movimiento por los derechos civiles. En 1955 votó con la mayoría por la derogación de la ley de segregación en los autobuses, impugnada por
Rosa Parks, y en 1965 dio la orden que permitió que Martin Luther King, Jr., encabezara una marcha histórica por los derechos civiles, desde Selma hasta Montgomery. Además, ordenó la integración en diversos servicios públicos en Alabama, y fue el primer juez federal que dictó la redistribución de representantes legislativos. Entre 1979 y 1992 se desempeñó en la Corte de Apelaciones de Distrito, y en 1995 recibió la Medalla presidencial de la libertad.
